Signs your Galaxy A71 needs a repair

  • Battery flat by the afternoon, or switching off with charge showing
  • Charger loose, or charging only at an angle
  • Headphones or the microphone not working
  • Cracked or split back cover
  • A green line on the screen (see the screen section)

A Samsung Galaxy A71 battery replacement costs £59 by post, a charging port £59 and a back cover £49, all with genuine Samsung parts and a 12-month warranty. Samsung's own price for an A71 battery is £79. I don't offer screen replacements on the A71, because of how its fingerprint reader works. The screen section below explains why, and covers the green line some A71 owners have seen.

The Galaxy A71 went on sale in the UK in February 2020 at £419, alongside the A51. It's the bigger of the two, with a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, the fingerprint reader under the display, a 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging, a glossy plastic back and a headphone jack. Owners who like the big screen tend to keep them going, and a battery is what most need.

Which Galaxy A71 do I have?

Go to Settings > About phone and check the model number. The A71 sold in the UK is SM-A715F. There was also a Galaxy A71 5G (SM-A716B), a different phone with different parts; if yours is the 5G, get in touch before booking. I'll ask for your model number and your phone's colour when you book. This guide shows where to find them.

Galaxy A71 screen replacement

The A71's fingerprint reader is an optical sensor beneath the display, calibrated to the screen it sits under. After a new screen it needs recalibrating with Samsung's own equipment, and the A71 isn't part of Samsung's Self-Repair programme, so that calibration isn't available to independent repairers. That's why I don't replace A71 screens. I'd rather tell you now than send your phone back with a fingerprint reader that may not work.

If your A71 screen is broken, Samsung's recommended price for a replacement is £154, and its repair service calibrates the fingerprint reader as part of the job. On a phone from 2020, that's a lot to spend, so compare it with a newer phone first. This guide explains the fingerprint problem in more detail.

A green line that appeared after an update? Several A71 owners have reported a thin green vertical line appearing on the screen after a software update, with no drop or knock. If a restart and a further update don't clear it, the display panel is the likely cause, and the fix is a new screen. This guide to lines and flicker on a Galaxy A screen explains how to check whether yours is the panel or the software.

Galaxy A71 battery replacement

After six years of use, most A71 batteries have lost a large part of their original capacity. The signs are a phone that won't see the afternoon, dies with charge showing, or only runs on the charger. You can check its condition in Samsung Members under Support > Phone diagnostics > Battery status, and this guide explains the result.

I warm the A71's plastic back until the adhesive releases and lift it off, then work the glued-in battery out without bending it, fit a genuine Samsung 4,500mAh battery and reseal the back with new adhesive. The screen and fingerprint sensor aren't disturbed, and I check the fingerprint reader before the phone goes back. It's £59, against Samsung's £79.

A new battery restores battery life. It won't make an older A71 quicker: lag is usually full storage, apps or software. This guide to fast battery drain helps you tell which you've got, and if your A71 won't turn on at all, start with these checks.

Galaxy A71 charging port repair

The A71's USB-C port sits on a small board at the bottom of the phone together with the headphone jack and the microphone. A genuine replacement board fixes a worn, loose or damaged port, and also a dead headphone jack or a microphone callers can't hear, when the fault is on that board.

Try another cable and plug first, and look into the port with a torch for packed lint. This checklist for a Galaxy A that won't charge goes through the rest. If it still won't charge reliably, the charging port repair is £59, and I test charging, fast charging, the headphone jack, the microphone and a data connection before it goes back.

Galaxy A71 back cover replacement

The A71's back is glossy plastic with a patterned finish. It won't shatter, but it cracks at the corners and splits around the camera, and scratches show on it. I fit a genuine Samsung back cover in your phone's colour and seal it with new adhesive. It's £49. The A71 has no water-resistance rating.

Is it worth repairing a Galaxy A71?

For a battery, often yes, if you're happy with the phone. Samsung ended security updates for the A71 in early 2024, so it no longer gets fixes for new security threats. It still works, and the big AMOLED screen is still good for video and reading. A £59 battery is a sensible way to keep it going; a £154 screen from Samsung usually isn't. This guide explains what the end of updates means, and this one weighs up every model.

Frequently asked questions

There's a green line on my A71's screen. Can it be fixed?
Several A71 owners reported a green line appearing after an update. If a restart and a further update don't clear it, it's a display fault and needs a new screen. I don't replace A71 screens, and Samsung's recommended price is £154.
Can you replace the screen on a Galaxy A71?
Not at the moment. Its fingerprint reader sits under the screen and needs calibrating with Samsung's equipment after a new screen, which isn't available outside Samsung's repair network for this model.
How much does a Galaxy A71 battery replacement cost?
£59 by post, with a genuine Samsung battery and a 12-month warranty. Samsung's own price is £79.
My A71's headphone jack stopped working. Can you fix it?
Usually. The headphone jack is on the same board as the charging port and microphone, so the charging port repair replaces all three.
Does the A71 still get updates?
No. Samsung ended security updates for the A71 in early 2024.
My phone's back is lifting. What should I do?
Stop charging it and contact me before posting it. A back that's lifting is often caused by a swollen battery, which needs handling carefully.

About this service

How does your mail-in repair service work?
Three steps: book and pay for your repair online, post your item to me using the packing instructions I email you, and I repair it, test it, and send it back tracked. You'll get updates as it moves through each stage.
What is your no-fix-no-fee promise?
Payment is taken upfront at booking. If I can't fix your item, there's no repair fee — I refund what you paid, less £4.99 return postage to send it back to you. Assessment bookings work differently: the £4.99 covers return postage and comes off the repair if you go ahead, but isn't refunded if you decide not to or it can't be repaired.
Do your repairs come with a warranty?
Yes. Every repair carries a 12-month workmanship warranty against the same fault returning. If it does, I'll put it right.
How long will my repair take?
Most repairs are completed within 1-3 working days of arrival, then posted back by tracked post. If a part needs ordering, I'll tell you as soon as I've diagnosed it and give you a realistic date. Diagnostic-led jobs take a little longer if I'm waiting on your approval of a quote.
How do I package my item safely to post it?
I send clear packing guidance when you book. In short: wrap the item well, use plenty of padding, and a sturdy box — the return leg is insured and tracked, and good packing on the way in protects your item too.
Where do I send my item?
Your postage address is included in the confirmation email after you book — you don't post anything until you've booked, so your item is always matched to your order.
Do you cover the whole UK?
Yes — I run a mail-in repair service, so you can send your item from anywhere in the UK. There's nothing local you need to find.
What if my item turns out to be unrepairable?
I'll tell you honestly and, where the fault allows, offer an alternative. If I can't fix it, there's no repair fee — I refund what you paid, less £4.99 return postage to send it back to you.
