Signs your Galaxy A51 needs a repair

  • Battery flat by lunchtime, or switching off with charge showing
  • Phone only working while plugged in
  • Charger loose, or charging only at an angle
  • Headphones or the microphone not working
  • Cracked or split back cover

A Samsung Galaxy A51 battery replacement costs £59 by post, a charging port £59 and a back cover £49, all with genuine Samsung parts and a 12-month warranty. Samsung's own price for an A51 battery is £79. I don't offer screen replacements on the A51, because of how its fingerprint reader works. The screen section below explains why, and where to go instead.

The Galaxy A51 went on sale in the UK in February 2020 at £329, and it became one of the most popular Android phones of its year. It has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with the fingerprint reader underneath it, a 4,000mAh battery, a glossy plastic back and a headphone jack. There was also an A51 5G at £429, with a bigger 4,500mAh battery and an aluminium frame. Six years on, the part that most A51s need is a battery.

Which Galaxy A51 do I have?

Go to Settings > About phone and check the model number. SM-A515F is the Galaxy A51, and SM-A516B is the Galaxy A51 5G. They take different batteries and charging parts, so I'll ask for the model number when you book, along with your phone's colour for a back cover. This guide shows where to find it.

Galaxy A51 screen replacement

Both A51 versions have an optical fingerprint reader under the screen. It shines light through the display and reads the reflection of your fingertip, so it has to be calibrated to the screen it sits under. After a new screen, that calibration needs Samsung's own equipment, and the A51 isn't part of Samsung's Self-Repair programme, so it isn't available to independent repairers. That's why I don't replace A51 screens. I'd rather tell you here than send your phone back with a fingerprint reader that may not work.

If your A51 screen is broken, Samsung's recommended price for a replacement is £134, or £164 for the A51 5G, and its repair service calibrates the fingerprint reader as part of the job. That's a lot to put into a phone from 2020, so weigh it against a newer phone first. If you use another repairer, ask before booking whether the screen is genuine and whether they calibrate the fingerprint reader afterwards. This guide explains the fingerprint problem in more detail.

Galaxy A51 battery replacement

The A51's 4,000mAh battery was modest even when new, and after years of charging most hold a lot less. The signs are a phone that needs charging by lunchtime, dies at 30% in the cold, or only works on the charger. You can check its condition in Samsung Members under Support > Phone diagnostics > Battery status, and this guide explains the result.

The A51's plastic back is glued to the frame. I warm it until the adhesive releases, lift it off, work the glued-in battery out without bending it, fit a genuine Samsung battery for your version and reseal the back with new adhesive. The battery sits behind the screen, so the job doesn't touch the screen or the fingerprint sensor, and I check the fingerprint reader works before the phone goes back. It's £59, against Samsung's £79. Here's why a genuine battery matters.

A new battery restores battery life. It won't make an A51 feel new again: lag on an older phone is usually full storage, apps or software. This guide to fast battery drain helps you tell which you've got, and if your A51 won't switch on at all, try these steps first.

Galaxy A51 charging port repair

On the A51 the USB-C port and the headphone jack are on a small separate board at the bottom of the phone. On the A51 5G they're on a flex that also carries the microphone. Either way, it's replaced as one part, not soldered to the main board, so a worn or loose port is fixed by fitting a genuine replacement part for your version, and a dead headphone jack often comes back with it.

Try another cable and plug first, and look into the port with a torch: six years of pocket lint packs down hard. This checklist for a Galaxy A that won't charge goes through the rest. If it still won't charge reliably, the charging port repair is £59, and I test charging, fast charging, the headphone jack, the microphone and a data connection before it goes back.

Galaxy A51 back cover replacement

The A51's back is glossy plastic that looks like glass, glued to the frame. It won't shatter, but it cracks at the corners, splits around the camera and scuffs badly over time. I fit a genuine Samsung back cover in your phone's colour and seal it with new adhesive. It's £49. Neither A51 version has a water-resistance rating.

Is it worth repairing a Galaxy A51?

For a battery, often yes, if you're happy with the phone. Samsung ended security updates for the A51 in early 2024, and for the A51 5G later that year, so neither gets fixes for new security threats. The phone still works, and plenty of A51s are kept going as second phones or handed down. A £59 battery makes sense if the rest of the phone is in good shape; a Samsung screen at £134 or more usually doesn't. This guide explains what the end of updates means, and this one weighs up every model.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace the screen on a Galaxy A51?
Not at the moment. The A51's fingerprint reader sits under the screen and has to be calibrated with Samsung's equipment after a new screen, which isn't available outside Samsung's repair network for this model. Samsung's recommended price is £134, or £164 for the A51 5G.
How much does a Galaxy A51 battery replacement cost?
£59 by post, with a genuine Samsung battery and a 12-month warranty. Samsung's own price is £79.
Are the A51 and A51 5G batteries the same?
No. The A51 has a 4,000mAh battery and the A51 5G a 4,500mAh one, and they aren't interchangeable. I fit the right one for your model number.
Will a new battery affect my fingerprint reader?
No. The fingerprint problem only applies to a new screen. A battery, charging port or back replacement leaves the screen and sensor where they are, and I check the fingerprint reader before the phone goes back.
Does the A51 still get updates?
No. Samsung ended security updates for the A51 in early 2024, and for the A51 5G later in 2024.
My phone's back is lifting. What should I do?
Stop charging it and contact me before posting it. A back that's lifting is often caused by a swollen battery, which needs handling carefully.

About this service

How does your mail-in repair service work?
Three steps: book and pay for your repair online, post your item to me using the packing instructions I email you, and I repair it, test it, and send it back tracked. You'll get updates as it moves through each stage.
What is your no-fix-no-fee promise?
Payment is taken upfront at booking. If I can't fix your item, there's no repair fee — I refund what you paid, less £4.99 return postage to send it back to you. Assessment bookings work differently: the £4.99 covers return postage and comes off the repair if you go ahead, but isn't refunded if you decide not to or it can't be repaired.
Do your repairs come with a warranty?
Yes. Every repair carries a 12-month workmanship warranty against the same fault returning. If it does, I'll put it right.
How long will my repair take?
Most repairs are completed within 1-3 working days of arrival, then posted back by tracked post. If a part needs ordering, I'll tell you as soon as I've diagnosed it and give you a realistic date. Diagnostic-led jobs take a little longer if I'm waiting on your approval of a quote.
How do I package my item safely to post it?
I send clear packing guidance when you book. In short: wrap the item well, use plenty of padding, and a sturdy box — the return leg is insured and tracked, and good packing on the way in protects your item too.
Where do I send my item?
Your postage address is included in the confirmation email after you book — you don't post anything until you've booked, so your item is always matched to your order.
Do you cover the whole UK?
Yes — I run a mail-in repair service, so you can send your item from anywhere in the UK. There's nothing local you need to find.
What if my item turns out to be unrepairable?
I'll tell you honestly and, where the fault allows, offer an alternative. If I can't fix it, there's no repair fee — I refund what you paid, less £4.99 return postage to send it back to you.
