Switch Lite stick drift: your options when the sticks are built in

On a Switch Lite the sticks are part of the console, so drift means posting the whole thing. Here are your two routes and how to choose between them.

The Switch Lite's sticks are built into the console, so there's no Joy-Con to swap out. If one drifts, the whole console has to be posted. Nintendo UK repairs Switch Lite stick drift free, even out of warranty, or I can fit Hall effect sticks for £49 (one stick) or £59 (both).

Why the Lite is different

On the original Switch and the OLED, the sticks sit inside detachable Joy-Con. If one drifts, you can post just the controller. The Switch Lite has no detachable Joy-Con and no dock output. Its sticks are fitted inside the console itself, so a stick repair means the console goes in the post.

The sticks themselves are the same type as the original Joy-Con: potentiometers. A small wiper slides over a resistive track, the track wears, dust gets in, and the reading drifts.

Check it's really drift first

Before you post anything, try the free fixes:

  1. Run a system update.
  2. Calibrate the sticks in System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Control Sticks. On the test screen, let go of the stick and watch whether the cursor moves on its own.
  3. Push the stick to each side and give the gap under it a couple of short bursts of compressed air, then calibrate again.
  4. Test in two or three games. Some games react to small stick movements more than others.

The full routine is in how to fix Joy-Con drift. The steps are the same on a Lite, apart from the fact that you can't test the stick on a different console.

Option 1: Nintendo's free drift repair

Nintendo UK repairs Switch Lite stick drift free of charge, even out of warranty, until further notice. It's been doing this since April 2023. If your Lite has never been opened, this is where I'd start.

A few things to know:

  • Nintendo can refuse if the fault comes from modification or an unofficial repair. If the Lite has been opened, it may say no.
  • You book through Nintendo UK's support website.
  • Nintendo says a repair "might take up to 10 working days", and you'll be without the console for that time.
  • Your saves live on the console's internal storage. Back up your save data before you send it anywhere, where you can.

More detail is in Nintendo's free drift repair explained.

Option 2: a Hall effect stick upgrade

My Switch Lite stick drift repair replaces the original sticks with Hall effect sticks. These sense position with magnets instead of a wiper on a track, so they don't wear the same way.

  • One stick: £49
  • Both sticks: £59

The Lite costs more than a single Joy-Con because the console has to be opened further to get to the sticks. If one stick is drifting, it's often worth doing both while it's open, since the other stick has had the same wear.

This route makes sense if:

  • the Lite has already been opened, so Nintendo may turn it away;
  • it's had drift before and you'd rather not have the same stick design fitted again;
  • you've got another fault that needs fixing at the same time, such as a cracked screen or a worn battery. Tell me when you book and I'll look at both.

Once I've opened the console, you should assume Nintendo's free drift repair won't be available for it afterwards.

Sending your Lite to me

  1. Book and pay online.
  2. Your confirmation email has the address and packing guidance. Take out the game card and microSD card, and pack the console well in a sturdy box. Packing tips are here.
  3. I fit the sticks, calibrate and test it on my bench, and send it back insured and tracked.

You pay the postage in; the return is included. It's no fix, no fee: if I can't repair it, I refund what you paid, less return postage. The repair has a 12-month warranty. If the back of the console is bulging or the screen is lifting, stop using it and get in touch before posting, because a swollen battery can't go through Royal Mail.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just send the sticks from a Switch Lite?

No. The Switch Lite's sticks are built into the console, so the whole console has to be posted, whether it goes to Nintendo or to me.

Is Nintendo's Switch Lite drift repair free out of warranty?

Yes, in the UK, until further notice. Nintendo may refuse if the console has been modified or repaired unofficially.

Should I replace both sticks on my Lite?

It's worth considering. Both sticks are the same design and have had similar use, and doing both costs £59 against £49 for one.
