Signs you need this repair

  • Menus scroll or selections jump on their own
  • Calibration shows the stick off centre at rest
  • Movement cuts out at certain angles
  • The drift returns soon after recalibrating

The Switch Lite uses the same kind of stick as a Joy-Con: a potentiometer, where a small wiper slides over a resistive track that wears with use. Dust gets in as well. The difference is that the Lite's sticks are built into the console, so there's nothing to detach and post separately. Drift on a Lite means the whole console comes to me.

Nintendo UK repairs Switch Lite stick drift free of charge, even out of warranty, until further notice. If you just want it working with standard sticks, that's the obvious first step, and this guide to Switch Lite drift explains your options. Nintendo can refuse if the console has been opened or modified, so go to them before anyone else works on it.

If you'd rather have sticks that don't wear the same way, I replace the original sticks with Hall effect sticks, which sense position with magnets instead of a sliding contact. I open the Lite, remove the drifting stick, fit the Hall effect stick, reassemble, calibrate and test it before it goes back. It's £49 for one stick or £59 for both. As both sides share the same kind of wear, doing both at once is worth considering.

The Lite is a sealed handheld, so opening it means working around the screen and battery. Take out your game card and microSD card before posting, and back up your saves where you can as a sensible precaution, even though your own console comes back to you. Frequently asked questions

Do I have to send the whole Switch Lite?
Yes. The Lite's sticks are built into the console, so there's no detachable controller to post on its own.
Should I replace one stick or both?
That's up to you. If only one side drifts, one stick is fine. Both sticks use the same wearing design, so if the console is well used, doing both at once saves posting it again later.
Will Nintendo still repair my Lite after this?
Nintendo can refuse a repair when a fault comes from an unofficial repair or modification. Once I've fitted Hall effect sticks, assume Nintendo's free drift route is no longer open for that console.

About this service

How does your mail-in repair service work?
Three steps: book and pay for your repair online, post your item to me using the packing instructions I email you, and I repair it, test it, and send it back tracked. You'll get updates as it moves through each stage.
What is your no-fix-no-fee promise?
Payment is taken upfront at booking. If I can't fix your item, there's no repair fee — I refund what you paid, less £4.99 return postage to send it back to you. Assessment bookings work differently: the £4.99 covers return postage and comes off the repair if you go ahead, but isn't refunded if you decide not to or it can't be repaired.
Do your repairs come with a warranty?
Yes. Every repair carries a 12-month workmanship warranty against the same fault returning. If it does, I'll put it right.
How long will my repair take?
Most repairs are completed within 3-6 working days of arrival, then posted back by tracked post. If a part needs ordering, I'll tell you as soon as I've diagnosed it and give you a realistic date. Diagnostic-led jobs take a little longer if I'm waiting on your approval of a quote.
How do I package my item safely to post it?
I send clear packing guidance when you book. In short: wrap the item well, use plenty of padding, and a sturdy box — the return leg is insured and tracked, and good packing on the way in protects your item too.
Where do I send my item?
Your postage address is included in the confirmation email after you book — you don't post anything until you've booked, so your item is always matched to your order.
Do you cover the whole UK?
Yes — I run a mail-in repair service, so you can send your item from anywhere in the UK. There's nothing local you need to find.
What if my item turns out to be unrepairable?
I'll tell you honestly and, where the fault allows, offer an alternative. If I can't fix it, there's no repair fee — I refund what you paid, less £4.99 return postage to send it back to you.
