If your PS5 is running hot, shutting down or sounding like a jet engine, you probably want to know two things: what it'll cost to fix, and whether it's worth it. The good news is that an overheating repair is one of the cheaper PS5 repairs. The catch is that prices vary a lot in what's actually included, and the cheapest quote isn't always the cheapest repair.
Here's what to expect in the UK, what should be included, and the questions worth asking.
What independent repairers charge
For a PS5 overheating repair, which usually means a clean inside and a refresh of the liquid metal, most independent UK repairers charge somewhere between about £45 and £65. Some quote only after a diagnostic check. A few include the service free with other repairs.
My price is £69 all-in for the original PS5, the Slim or the Pro. That includes a full strip-down clean, the liquid metal refreshed where needed, thermal putty replaced where needed, an hour's test running a demanding game, and tracked return postage. The work is covered by a 12-month warranty. You pay to post the console to me.
So I'm not the cheapest headline price, and I'd rather be upfront about why. The difference is mostly in what's included, which is what the rest of this guide is about.
What's included matters more than the price
When you compare quotes, check these:
- Postage. A PS5 is a big, heavy parcel. Some prices include return postage, some charge for it separately, and some are walk-in only. £45 plus return postage can end up costing about the same as an all-in price.
- Liquid metal or paste. Some repairers replace the PS5's liquid metal with ordinary thermal paste, because paste is easier to apply. Paste doesn't conduct heat as well, and the console was designed around liquid metal. Ask which they use. I explain the difference in PS5 liquid metal explained.
- A clean inside, or just the vents. A proper overheating repair means taking the fan off and cleaning the heatsink fins. Blowing air through the vents isn't the same job.
- Testing. Ask how the console is tested before it's returned. A console that runs hot needs testing under a real load, for long enough to show the problem has gone, not just switching on.
- Warranty. Warranties on this repair range from a month to 12 months or more. A longer warranty shows the repairer expects the work to last.
- What happens if it isn't heat. Some repairers keep a fee if the fault turns out to be something else. With me, if I find the shutdowns aren't caused by heat, I'll tell you what I've found and quote. If you'd rather not go ahead, it's no fix, no fee: I refund what you paid, less return postage.
What can add to the cost
A worn fan. Most loud fans just need cleaning. If the fan's bearing is worn, for example it grinds or ticks after it's been cleaned, it needs replacing, and that's an extra part. I quote for it before fitting one. If you'd rather not, I still do the service and send the console back.
A fault that isn't heat. A console that cuts out suddenly, at random or in the menus, often has a power fault rather than a heat problem. That's a different repair. PS5 turning off by itself explains how to tell them apart, and my PS5 no power repair covers power faults.
A previous repair attempt. A console that has been opened before can arrive with liquid metal spread beyond its seal, missing screws or damaged thermal putty. That takes longer to put right, and I'll tell you if I find it.
Is it worth repairing?
Almost always, if the console is otherwise working. An overheating repair costs a small fraction of a new PS5, and a clean console usually runs noticeably quieter. It's also one of the few repairs that prevents a bigger one: a console that runs hot for months is working its components harder than it needs to.
What you can do for free first
Before booking anything, work through the free checks in PS5 overheating: what to check first. Give the console space, get it out of any closed cabinet, vacuum the vents, and empty the dust catchers if it's an original PS5. How to clean a PS5 walks through it. Those checks cost nothing and solve a real share of overheating problems.
Common questions
How much does it cost to clean a PS5 in the UK?
Most independent repairers charge about £45 to £65 for a clean inside with the liquid metal refreshed, before postage. Mine is £69 all-in, including tracked return postage, an hour's test and a 12-month warranty.
Can I get my PS5 cleaned under Sony's warranty?
Dust build-up is generally treated as maintenance rather than a fault, but if your console is still in warranty and overheating, contact Sony first. Having it opened by someone else may affect that warranty.
How long does a PS5 clean last?
It depends mostly on where the console lives. In a clean room, with space around it and the vents vacuumed now and again, a clean can last years. In a dusty room, around pets or on the floor, dust builds up faster.
My recommendation
Expect to pay somewhere around £45 to £65 for a PS5 overheating repair from an independent repairer, before postage, and compare what's included rather than just the headline price. Ask whether they strip it down, whether they use liquid metal or paste, how they test it, and what the warranty is. My PS5 overheating repair is £69 all-in, with liquid metal, an hour's test running a demanding game, tracked return postage and a 12-month warranty. When you're ready to send it, how to pack a PS5 for posting will help it arrive safely.
