PS5 Disc Drive Repair Cost in the UK: What You Should Pay in 2026

PS5 disc drive repairs vary in price and in what's included, and the right answer depends on your model. Here's what a fair price looks like, and when a repair isn't worth it.

If your PS5 won't read discs, the next question is what it'll cost to fix, and whether it's worth fixing at all. The answer depends more on which PS5 you have than on anything else. On the original PS5, a repair is usually the only realistic fix. On the Slim and Pro, a new Sony drive usually costs less.

Here's what to expect in the UK, what should be included, and when a repair isn't the right answer.

What independent repairers charge

For an original PS5 disc drive repair, which usually means a new laser, most independent UK repairers charge somewhere between about £80 and £110. Prices vary as much in what's included as in the headline figure.

My price is £94 all-in for the original PS5 disc edition. That includes the new laser and deck assembly, the labour and tracked return postage, and it's covered by a 12-month warranty. You pay to post the console to me. Grinding, stuck discs and loading faults are covered by the same price.

Why the original PS5 needs a repair, not a new drive

The original PS5's disc drive has a control board that's paired to the console's mainboard. A drive from another console, or even a new one, won't read games in yours. So the repair has to be done inside your own drive: the laser and deck are replaced, and the paired board is kept. I explain this properly in can you replace a PS5 disc drive?

That's also why a used drive bought online is a false economy for an original PS5. It fits, but it won't work.

Why the Slim and Pro are different

On the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro, the drive is a separate unit that clips on and pairs online. Sony sells a replacement for £69.99. The replacement laser for those drives costs more than that on its own, so a laser repair would cost well over the price of a new Sony drive. For those models, the new drive is usually the better buy. PS5 Slim disc drive not working goes into more detail.

What's included matters as much as the price

When you compare quotes, check these:

  • Postage. Some prices include return postage, some charge for it separately, and some include postage both ways at a higher price. A PS5 is a heavy parcel, so this makes a real difference.

  • Warranty. Warranties on this repair range from a few days' returns to 12 months. A new laser should last, and a longer warranty shows the repairer expects it to.

  • What happens if it can't be fixed. Some repairers keep a labour or diagnostic charge if the fault turns out to be the board. With me it's no fix, no fee: if I can't repair it, I refund what you paid, less return postage.

  • Which parts are used. Laser assemblies vary in quality. A cheap laser that fails within months costs you a second repair.

What can push the price up, or rule a repair out

A failed control board. If the drive's paired control board has died, it can't be replaced, so the drive can't be repaired. With me, that's no fix, no fee.

A fault on the mainboard side. Occasionally the drive is fine, and the fault is in the console's connection to it. That's a different repair, and I'll quote before doing anything more.

A previous repair attempt. A drive that has been opened before, or a console that has had a used drive fitted, can arrive with damaged cables or missing parts. That takes longer to put right.

Is it still worth repairing now discs are ending?

Sony has announced that from January 2028, new PlayStation games won't be released on disc. That doesn't affect the discs you already own. Every game in your collection still needs a working drive, and so do Blu-ray and DVD films.

So the question is really about your collection. If you have a shelf of PS5 and PS4 games, a repair costs far less than buying them again digitally, when that's even possible. If you only ever buy digital, you may not need the drive at all, and the console works fine without it.

How to avoid paying for the wrong repair

Before booking anything, work through the free checks in PS5 unable to read disc: try other discs, clean them, update the system and rebuild the database in Safe Mode. If the problem is a disc that won't come out, try the safe steps in PS5 disc stuck or won't eject first.

My recommendation

On an original PS5, expect to pay somewhere around £80 to £110 for a good disc drive repair, and compare what's included, not just the headline price. Postage, warranty and what happens if it can't be fixed all matter. My PS5 disc drive repair is £94 all-in with tracked return postage, a 12-month warranty and no fix, no fee. On a Slim or Pro, buy Sony's replacement drive instead. When you're ready to send an original PS5, how to pack a PS5 for posting will help it arrive safely.
