PS5 Disc Drive Repair

£94

No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns

Signs you need this repair

  • "Unable to read disc" or "Unrecognised disc" errors
  • The disc spins but the game never loads
  • Blu-rays fail while DVDs still play
  • Grinding, clicking or scraping from the drive
  • A disc won't go in, won't eject, or is stuck inside

A PS5 disc drive repair is the fix when your console won't read games or films any more: an "unable to read disc" message, a disc that spins without loading, or a Blu-ray that fails while DVDs still play. On the original PS5 the most common cause is a worn laser. It's the part that reads every disc, and it gradually loses the strength to read the dense layers on a PS5 game or 4K Blu-ray.

Here's why a disc drive repair is more involved than it looks. The original PS5's disc drive has its own small control board, and that board is paired to the console's mainboard. A whole replacement drive from another console won't read games, because it isn't paired to yours. So I don't swap the drive. I open your original drive, replace the laser and deck assembly with a new one, keep the paired board, and test it with PS5 and PS4 games, Blu-ray and DVD before it's posted back.

The same £94 covers the mechanical faults too: a drive that grinds or clicks, won't take a disc, won't eject, or has a disc stuck inside. It includes parts and tracked return postage, with a no-fix-no-fee promise and a 12-month warranty. If the drive's paired control board itself has failed, it can't be replaced, so it's no fix, no fee: I refund what you paid, less return postage.

This repair is for the original PS5 disc edition (model numbers CFI-1000, CFI-1100 and CFI-1200). I don't repair the PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro disc drive. Their laser costs more than Sony's own replacement drive, which clips on and pairs online in a few minutes, so a new Sony drive is the better buy for those models.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my PS5 say "unable to read disc"?
Rule out the simple causes first: try a different disc, clean the one that fails, and install any system update. If several clean discs fail, and especially if DVDs still play but Blu-rays and games don't, a worn laser is the most likely cause.
Can't you just swap in a whole new disc drive?
Not on the original PS5. The drive's control board is paired to the console's mainboard, so a drive from another console won't read games. I replace the laser inside your own drive and keep the paired board.
Do you repair the PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro disc drive?
No. Their disc drive is a separate unit that clips on, and Sony sells a replacement for less than the laser alone costs. A new Sony drive pairs with your console online in a few minutes, so it's the better option for those models.
What if it's not the laser?
If the drive's paired control board has failed, it can't be replaced, so there's no repair fee: I refund what you paid, less return postage, and send your console back. If the fault turns out to be on the console's mainboard instead, I'll tell you what I've found and quote before doing anything more.
Can you get a stuck disc out?
Yes. A stuck disc, a drive that won't eject and a drive that won't take a disc are all covered by the same price. I'll return the disc with your console.
Will the repair affect my games, saves or settings?
No. The repair is to the disc drive only. Your storage, games, saves and settings aren't touched.
Should I send any discs?
No, just the console. Take any disc out first if you can, but don't force a stuck one. I'll remove it safely. I test with my own discs.
Is it worth repairing now that new games are going digital?
Sony stops making discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028, but every disc you already own, plus Blu-ray and DVD films, still needs a working drive. If you have a disc collection, the repair costs a fraction of replacing it digitally.

About this service

How does your mail-in repair service work?
Three steps: book and pay for your repair online, post your item to me using the packing instructions I email you, and I repair it, test it, and send it back tracked. You'll get updates as it moves through each stage.
What is your no-fix-no-fee promise?
Payment is taken upfront at booking. If I can't fix your item, there's no repair fee — I refund what you paid, less £4.99 return postage to send it back to you. Assessment bookings work differently: the £4.99 covers return postage and comes off the repair if you go ahead, but isn't refunded if you decide not to or it can't be repaired.
Do your repairs come with a warranty?
Yes. Every repair carries a 12-month workmanship warranty against the same fault returning. If it does, I'll put it right.
How long will my repair take?
Most repairs are completed within 3-6 working days of arrival, then posted back by tracked post. If a part needs ordering, I'll tell you as soon as I've diagnosed it and give you a realistic date. Diagnostic-led jobs take a little longer if I'm waiting on your approval of a quote.
How do I package my item safely to post it?
I send clear packing guidance when you book. In short: wrap the item well, use plenty of padding, and a sturdy box — the return leg is insured and tracked, and good packing on the way in protects your item too.
Where do I send my item?
Your postage address is included in the confirmation email after you book — you don't post anything until you've booked, so your item is always matched to your order.
Do you cover the whole UK?
Yes — I run a mail-in repair service, so you can send your item from anywhere in the UK. There's nothing local you need to find.
What if my item turns out to be unrepairable?
I'll tell you honestly and, where the fault allows, offer an alternative. If I can't fix it, there's no repair fee — I refund what you paid, less £4.99 return postage to send it back to you.
