There's an important piece of good news for GHD Platinum+ owners, and it's worth stating right at the top because it catches so many people out: the GHD Platinum+ (model S8T262) is repairable. It's often confused with the older round-button Platinum, which isn't — but the Platinum+ is a different, sliding-switch straightener, and most of its faults are a straightforward, worthwhile fix. Here's what typically goes wrong, how to be sure you've actually got a Platinum+, and how the repair works.
I've been repairing electronics for over 25 years, so this is the honest, practical guide for your model.
The confusion that catches everyone out: Platinum vs Platinum+
This is the single most important thing to get right, because it determines whether your straighteners can be repaired at all:
GHD Platinum+ (S8T262) — a newer model with a sliding on/off switch. Repairable. This page.
GHD Platinum (S8T261) — the older model with a round push-button. Not repairable internally — GHD designed it that way.
One digit in the model number (S8T262 vs S8T261), and one look at the switch, is the difference between "yes, this can be fixed" and "unfortunately, no." So before anything else, check yours: sliding switch = Platinum+ = repairable. If yours turns out to be the round-button Platinum instead, my guide on whether the Eclipse and Platinum can be repaired explains your (more limited) options. And if you're not certain which you've got, how to find your GHD model number will settle it.
Assuming you've confirmed it's the Platinum+ — good news, read on.
The most common GHD Platinum+ faults
Won't heat up
As with most GHDs, the most common Platinum+ fault is powering on normally but never getting hot — the plates stay cold despite the lights and beep. This is typically a thermal fuse or heater element issue; my guide to GHDs that won't heat up explains the causes. The correct parts for the Platinum+ differ from the older models, so it's a fault best fixed by someone who knows the model.
Cutting out or only working when you hold the cable
The Platinum+'s mains cable can fail where it flexes near the iron, giving intermittent power — straighteners that cut in and out, or only work when the cable's held a certain way. It's a common, inexpensive fix, covered in my guide to GHD cable faults.
Completely dead
No lights, no beep, nothing? That's a power fault — cable, plug fuse, or internal fuse. Worth checking the free things first (see GHD won't turn on) before it comes in.
One plate cold, or not getting hot enough
The Platinum+ can also develop the more specific heat faults — one plate heating while the other stays cold (a failed element), or warming up but never reaching full temperature (a sensor issue). Both are repairable.
It's worth noting the Platinum+ is one of GHD's more sophisticated straighteners — its selling point is the temperature-control technology that adjusts heat across the plates. That extra electronics means diagnosis benefits from someone who understands the model rather than a generic once-over, which is exactly the kind of work I do.
What a GHD Platinum+ repair costs
The Platinum+ sits in my higher pricing tier, alongside the Gold and Max: a flat £39 all-in. That covers the part, labour, return postage and a full PAT safety test — no hidden charges. Every repair is backed by my no-fix-no-fee promise — if I can't fix it, you don't pay for the repair — and a 12-month warranty against the same fault returning.
How the repair works
Send your Platinum+ in and I'll diagnose the actual fault properly — testing the cable, fuse, elements, sensor and control board as needed — fit the correct model-specific parts, then heat-test the straighteners to confirm they reach and hold the right temperature, and PAT safety-test them before they come back. I do the work myself, in-house, from start to finish.
Is it worth repairing a GHD Platinum+?
Yes — very much so. The Platinum+ is one of GHD's premium straighteners, retailing well over £150 when new, so a £39 repair to fix a single failed component is a clear saving against replacing it — and it keeps a genuinely high-end pair in use rather than in landfill. With the no-fix-no-fee promise, there's no risk in finding out what's wrong.
If your GHD Platinum+ has stopped working, you can book a GHD Platinum+ repair for £39 all in — I'll send simple instructions for posting your straighteners in, confirm the exact fault when they arrive, and get them back to you working as they should.
