If your Xbox Series X won't read discs, grinds or has a disc stuck inside, the next question is what it will cost to fix. Prices vary, and so does what's included. Here's what to expect in the UK.

What independent repairers charge

For an Xbox Series X disc drive or laser repair, most independent UK repairers charge somewhere between about £80 and £150. Some offer the laser and the full drive at different prices, and warranties range from three months to a year.

My price is £94 all-in. That covers not reading discs, grinding, stuck discs and a drive that won't take or eject a disc. It includes parts, tracked return postage, a test with game discs, Blu-ray and DVD, and an hour's test running a demanding game. The work is covered by a 12-month warranty. You pay to post the console to me.

Why the drive board matters for price

The Series X drive board is paired to the console, so it has to be kept. A repair either replaces the laser inside your drive, or fits a replacement mechanism and transfers your original board onto it. That transfer takes care and some soldering. Any quote that talks about simply swapping in a new drive, without mentioning the board, is worth questioning. I explain it in can you replace an Xbox Series X disc drive?

What's included matters

  • Postage. A Series X is a heavy parcel. Check whether return postage is included.
  • Warranty. A repair warranty of three months is common. Longer shows more confidence in the parts.
  • Testing. The drive should be tested with game discs, Blu-ray and DVD, not just one disc.
  • What happens if it can't be fixed. If the paired board has failed, the drive can't be repaired. With me, that's no fix, no fee: I refund what you paid, less return postage.
  • Mechanical faults. Check whether stuck discs and grinding are covered, or charged extra. With me, they're the same price.

Is it worth repairing?

If you have a collection of games or films on disc, usually yes. A repair costs far less than buying those games again digitally, where that's even possible. If you only ever buy digital, the console works fine without the drive.

Before you pay for anything

Work through the free checks in Xbox Series X not reading discs: another disc, cleaning, a full restart and updates. For a stuck disc, try the safe steps in Xbox Series X disc stuck or grinding.

What can go wrong with a cheap repair

The drive board is the part that makes a Series X drive repair different from most. It's small, delicate, and it can't be replaced if it's damaged. A rushed board transfer, with too much heat or a slipped tool, can destroy the pairing, and then no repair will bring the drive back. That's worth bearing in mind if a quote looks unusually low, or if you're thinking of doing the transfer yourself.

Other things to ask about:

  • The laser or mechanism used. Replacement parts vary in quality. A poor laser can fail again within months.
  • Whether the disc is returned. If a disc was stuck inside, it should come back with the console.

Common questions

Is a laser repair cheaper than a full drive?

It can be, depending on which part has failed. With me, it's one price for the drive repair, whichever part is needed.

Does the Series S need a disc drive repair?

No. The Series S has no disc drive.

My recommendation

Expect to pay around £80 to £150 for an Xbox Series X disc drive repair, and check that the repair keeps your paired drive board, and what the warranty and postage cover. My Xbox Series X disc drive repair is £94 all-in with a 12-month warranty. When you're ready, how to pack an Xbox for posting will help it arrive safely.
