A damaged USB port is one of the smaller PS5 repairs, but it still means opening the console, and front and rear ports are repaired in quite different ways. Here's what to expect in the UK, and what to check before you book.
Is it really the port?
Before paying for anything, check the free fixes in PS5 USB port not working. If your controller won't charge in rest mode, the rest mode USB power setting is the most common cause, and a charge-only or worn-out cable is the next.
What repairers charge
Most independent UK repairers charge somewhere between about £69 and £90 for a PS5 USB port repair. Some prices change with the port: front or rear, USB-A or USB-C, or one port or two.
My price is £69 for one port, front or rear, for the original PS5, the Slim or the Pro. That includes parts, tracked return postage, a test of the port for charging and data, and an hour's test running a demanding game. The work is covered by a 12-month warranty. If more than one port is damaged, I'll quote for the others before doing any work.
Front and rear ports are different jobs
- Front ports sit on a small separate board inside the console, connected by a cable. The repair replaces that board. It's quicker, but it still means taking the console apart.
- Rear ports are soldered directly to the console's main board. The repair means removing the damaged port and soldering in a new one, which takes more care.
A single price for either port keeps things simple, and you don't pay more because the damaged port happens to be at the back.
What's included matters
- Postage. A PS5 is a big parcel. Check whether return postage is included.
- Testing. The port should be tested for both charging and data, not just whether something lights up.
- Warranty. Check the length.
- What happens if it isn't the port. With me, if the fault turns out to be something else, I tell you and quote. If you'd rather not go ahead, it's no fix, no fee: I refund what you paid, less return postage.
Is it worth repairing?
Usually, yes. It's an inexpensive repair compared with the console, and a damaged port can get worse. A loose port can short or damage the device plugged into it. If you only use one port and the damaged one is spare, you might live with it, but a port that's physically broken is worth fixing before it causes a bigger problem.
Common questions
Can I replace a PS5 USB port myself?
The front ports are on a separate board, so replacing them is possible if you're comfortable taking the console apart, including the fan and shielding. The rear ports are soldered to the main board, and they need proper soldering equipment and experience. A slip there can damage the board.
Will a damaged USB port affect anything else?
Usually it only affects that port. But a loose or bent port can short, which can damage whatever is plugged into it, including your controller. It's worth fixing rather than forcing cables into it.
Is USB-C more likely to break than USB-A?
USB-C ports have a thin tongue in the centre that can bend or snap if a cable is pulled at an angle, so they're a little more delicate. Pulling cables out straight, rather than yanking them sideways, protects both kinds.
My recommendation
Rule out the setting and the cable first. If the port really is damaged, expect to pay around £69 to £90, and check that postage and proper testing are included. My PS5 USB port repair is £69 a port, front or rear, all-in. When you're ready, how to pack a PS5 for posting will help it arrive safely.
