The original Game Boy Advance screen is dim because it has no light of its own, so you need good room light to see it. An IPS mod swaps it for a modern backlit panel. A drop-in kit costs £85 and fits the original shell without cutting, and a laminated kit costs £109 and comes with a new shell it needs.
Why is the original GBA screen so dim?
The Game Boy Advance (model AGB-001, on the label on the back) uses a reflective screen with no backlight or frontlight. It relies entirely on the light around you. In daylight or under a good lamp it's playable, but in an ordinary living room it looks dark and muddy, and the colours are muted. That's not a fault; it's how the console was designed.
Many players tilted the console towards a window or sat under a lamp to see it. An IPS mod removes that problem.
What is an IPS mod?
IPS is a type of LCD panel used in modern phones and monitors. It gives bright, even colour and good viewing angles. An IPS mod replaces the original GBA screen with one of these panels, complete with its own backlight, so you can play in any light.
There are two main kinds of kit for the GBA: drop-in and laminated.
Drop-in IPS kit (£85)
A drop-in kit is designed to fit inside the original shell without any cutting. The panel sits where the old screen was, and I fit a new glass lens over it. You keep your console's original shell and look, with a far brighter picture behind the lens.
- Keeps the original shell.
- No cutting or trimming of the plastics.
- Includes a new glass lens.
Book it on the GBA IPS screen mod page.
Laminated IPS kit (£109)
In a laminated kit, the glass is bonded directly to the panel. There's no gap between the lens and the screen, so the picture sits right at the surface and looks closer to a phone screen. The trade-off is that it needs a laminated-ready replacement shell, because the original won't take it. That new shell is included in the price.
- Glass bonded to the panel for a cleaner, closer-looking picture.
- Needs a laminated-ready shell, which is included.
- Your console gets a new shell, so the original is replaced.
Book it on the GBA laminated IPS mod page.
The on-screen menu
Most IPS kits have an on-screen menu, often called an OSD (on-screen display). It lets you change the brightness and choose colour palettes. On most kits you open it with a button combination or a small touch pad, depending on the kit. After the mod, you'll be able to set the brightness to suit where you're playing, rather than hunting for a lamp.
Which should you choose?
- Choose drop-in if you like your current shell, want to keep the console looking as it did, and want the lower price.
- Choose laminated if you want the cleanest, most modern-looking picture and are happy for the console to get a new shell.
Both give you a backlit screen you can see in any room. The difference is mostly in how the picture sits behind the glass and whether you keep your original shell.
The collector-value caveat
Mods can't be undone easily. If your GBA is rare, boxed or in excellent original condition, a mod may reduce its value to collectors. That matters more for a laminated mod, where the original shell is replaced. If you have a console like that, it's worth thinking about before you book. For an everyday player's console, most owners find the difference in usability outweighs that concern.
Your console needs to work first
All mods need a working console. If yours has a fault, such as no power or no sound, that needs fixing first. You can book the repair alongside the mod, or get in touch first. Is the GBA IPS mod worth it?
If you play your GBA rather than keep it on a shelf, it's one of the most worthwhile upgrades you can make. The original screen is the console's biggest weakness, and an IPS panel fixes it without changing how the games play. If the console is a collector's piece, keep it original.

Frequently asked questions
Will an IPS mod change how my games play?
No. The mod replaces the screen and adds a backlight. The games, controls and sound work as they did before.
Do I have to cut my GBA shell for a drop-in kit?
No. A drop-in kit is designed to fit the original shell without cutting. The laminated kit is the one that needs a new shell, and that shell is included in its price.
Can I change the brightness after the mod?
Yes, on most kits. The on-screen menu lets you adjust brightness and pick colour palettes, usually with a button combination or a touch pad.
