A Game Boy with no sound or crackly sound usually has a dirty volume wheel, a dirty headphone socket, a worn speaker, or ageing capacitors. The first two are worth checking at home. If they don't help, a sound repair is £35, and a recap is £45.
1. Work the volume wheel
The volume wheel on the side of the console is a small variable resistor. Over the years, dust and grime get inside it, and the contact inside stops making a clean connection. The result is sound that crackles as you turn it, cuts out at certain points, or only works at full volume.
- With a game running, turn the wheel slowly from one end to the other.
- Listen for crackles, dropouts, or a spot where the sound suddenly comes back.
- Roll it end to end a dozen times or so. Sometimes that alone wipes enough grime off the contact to help for a while.
If the sound only works at one position, or it crackles all the way through, the wheel likely needs cleaning or replacing inside the console.
2. Check the headphone socket
This one catches a lot of people out. The headphone socket has a small switch inside it. When you plug headphones in, the switch cuts the speaker so the sound goes to your headphones instead. If the socket is dirty or worn, the switch can stick, and the console behaves as if headphones are plugged in all the time. The speaker goes silent.
- Plug a pair of headphones in and listen. If the sound is fine through them, the sound chip and volume wheel are probably working.
- Plug the headphones in and out a few times. This can sometimes free up a sticky switch.
- Look inside the socket with a torch for fluff or debris, and don't push anything metal into it.
If the sound comes through headphones but not the speaker, the socket or the speaker is the likely cause. If there's no sound through either, the fault is further back.
3. Listen to the speaker
Speakers in these consoles are decades old now. The paper cone can split, and the wiring can go brittle. A worn speaker tends to sound buzzy, rattly or thin, especially at higher volume. If the sound through headphones is clean but the speaker sounds harsh, the speaker is the prime suspect.
4. Ageing capacitors
Capacitors are small components that smooth the power and sound signals, and the electrolytic ones age over time. As they wear, sound can go quiet, distorted or disappear altogether. There's no home check for this, but if the wheel, the socket and the speaker all seem fine, capacitors are a common cause.
Which repair is right?
- No sound or crackly sound repair: £35. For any model. I find what's causing the fault, whether that's the speaker, the volume wheel or the headphone socket, and put it right.
- Recap and restoration: £45. A recap replaces the ageing electrolytic capacitors. It suits a console where the sound fault comes from worn capacitors, or an older console you want to freshen up more generally.
If you're not sure which one you need, book the sound repair or get in touch and describe what you're hearing. The full price list is in the Game Boy repair cost guide, and every service is on the Game Boy repairs page.
If your console doesn't power on at all, start with these power checks instead. A sound repair needs a console that turns on.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Game Boy only have sound through headphones?
The headphone socket has a switch that cuts the speaker when headphones are in. If it's dirty or stuck, the speaker stays off. A worn speaker can also cause this.
Can I clean the volume wheel myself?
Rolling it end to end can help a little. A proper clean means opening the console, so if you're not comfortable with that, it's covered by the sound repair.
Is the sound repair the same price for every model?
Yes. The no sound or crackly sound repair is the same price for the original Game Boy, the Pocket and the Color.
