Game Boy Sound Repair
No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns
Reasons to book
- No sound from the speaker at all
- Sound crackles or cuts out as you turn the volume wheel
- Sound is much quieter than it should be
- Headphones work but the speaker doesn't, or the other way round
- The sound buzzes or distorts at higher volume
Crackly, quiet or missing sound on a Game Boy can come from a few places: a worn speaker, a dirty volume wheel or headphone socket, or ageing capacitors (small components that smooth the power and sound signal). The symptoms often overlap, so the first job is finding which one it is.
I open the console and test the sound path from the board to the speaker and headphone socket. Depending on what I find, I clean the volume wheel and socket, fit a new speaker, or replace the capacitors involved. Where it suits the console, an amp board (a small amplifier fitted with a new speaker) replaces the old sound path, which gives louder, cleaner sound. Then I test it with a game through the speaker and headphones, across the full range of the volume wheel.
This service covers the original Game Boy (DMG-01), the Game Boy Pocket (MGB-001) and the Game Boy Color (CGB-001). The model code is on the label on the back.
Honest limits. If the fault turns out to be wider than sound, for example ageing capacitors affecting other parts of the console, a recap and restoration may be the better route, and I'll tell you before going ahead. Very corroded boards need a look first, so if yours has battery damage, get in touch.
Before you post it, try these checks for a Game Boy with no sound, such as testing with headphones and rolling the volume wheel end to end a few times. The repair is no fix, no fee, with a 12-month warranty.
