Game Boy Recap & Restoration
No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns
Reasons to book
- The sound is weak, crackly or distorted
- The screen is dim, faint or flickers
- Power is unreliable even with fresh batteries
- You want an older console serviced before daily use
A recap replaces the ageing electrolytic capacitors on the board. Capacitors are small components that store and smooth power, and the electrolytic type ages over time. As they wear, they can cause faint or crackly sound, display faults and unreliable power. On a console that's decades old, those symptoms are worth checking before anything else is changed.
I open the console, check the board, and replace the ageing electrolytic capacitors with new ones. I clean the board and the battery and cartridge contacts while it's open, so the console is in better shape overall, then close it up and test it with a game, checking sound, screen and power.
This service covers the original Game Boy (DMG-01), the Game Boy Pocket (MGB-001) and the Game Boy Color (CGB-001). The model code is on the label on the back.
Honest limits. A recap is a targeted repair, not a cure-all. It deals with faults caused by ageing capacitors. It won't fix a worn speaker, a sticky button, leaked-battery corrosion or vertical lines on an original Game Boy screen, which have their own repairs. If sound is your only problem, the sound repair may be the better place to start, and if I find the fault is elsewhere, I'll tell you before going ahead. Very corroded boards need a look first, so get in touch if yours has battery damage.
