Game Boy Advance IPS Screen Mod
No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns
Reasons to book
- The screen is too dim to play without a lamp
- You want to play in bed, on a train or anywhere the light isn't great
- You want adjustable brightness and colour palettes
- You'd like a fresh glass lens on the front
- You'd rather keep the original shell than change to a new one
The Game Boy Advance screen has no light of its own. In good daylight it's fine, but anywhere else you end up tilting the console towards a lamp. An IPS mod replaces that screen with a modern backlit IPS panel. IPS is a type of LCD screen with good colour and wide viewing angles, the same family used in most phones, so you can see it clearly in any light.
For this job I fit a drop-in IPS kit, which means it fits the original shell without any cutting. I open the console, take out the old screen, and connect the new panel to the board. Then I fit a new glass lens over the front. Most kits have an on-screen menu (OSD) for brightness and colour palettes, usually adjusted with a button combination or a touch pad. Once it's back together, I test it on my bench with a game running before it goes back to you.
This mod is for the original Game Boy Advance, model AGB-001 on the label. The folding SP has its own SP IPS screen mod. If you'd prefer the glass bonded to the panel, which looks closer to a phone screen, that's the laminated IPS mod. It goes into a new shell.
There are a few honest limits. The mod needs a working console, so if yours won't turn on, has no sound or has dead buttons, that needs fixing first. Book the repair as well, or get in touch. Mods can't be undone easily. If your GBA is boxed or rare, a mod may reduce its value to collectors, so it's worth thinking about that before you book. A cracked screen under the lens needs a look first, so get in touch before sending it.
