Reasons to book
- Your AGS-001's frontlight looks washed out
- You want a sharper, brighter picture than the original SP screen
- You want adjustable brightness and colour palettes
- The original screen is marked or failing
- You're building up an SP to play every day
The Game Boy Advance SP came in two versions. The AGS-001 is frontlit, meaning a light shines onto the screen from the edge. The AGS-101 is backlit and noticeably brighter. An IPS mod replaces either screen with a modern backlit IPS panel. IPS is a type of LCD screen with good colour and wide viewing angles, the same family used in most phones.
On an AGS-001, the difference is the biggest, because you go from a frontlit screen to a backlit one. On an AGS-101, which is already backlit, the mod adds adjustable brightness and colour options. Most kits have an on-screen menu (OSD) for brightness and colour palettes, usually adjusted with a button combination or a touch pad. If you're not sure which model you have, AGS-001 vs AGS-101 explains how to tell.
I open the SP, take out the old screen, and fit an SP IPS kit. Then I rebuild it and test it on my bench with a game running before it goes back.
There are a few honest limits. The mod needs a working console, so if your SP won't charge or hold charge, that needs sorting too. The SP full upgrade covers the screen, USB-C and a new battery together. Damaged SP hinges or ribbon cables need a look first, so get in touch before booking. Mods can't be undone easily. If your SP is boxed or rare, a mod may reduce its value to collectors. If your battery is bulging, get in touch before posting, because a swollen lithium battery can't go through Royal Mail.
