Is a GBA SP IPS Mod Worth It? An Honest Take

Thinking about an IPS screen for your GBA SP? What actually changes, how it compares with buying a backlit AGS-101, and when not to bother.

For most people with a frontlit AGS-001, yes: an IPS mod gives you a brighter, sharper screen than even the backlit AGS-101, usually for less than a good AGS-101 costs. The exceptions are rare, boxed or special-edition consoles, where a mod may reduce the value to collectors. If your battery and charge port are tired too, the full upgrade bundle is usually the better buy.

What an IPS mod actually is

IPS is a type of modern LCD panel with its own backlight, the kind of screen used in many phones and tablets. An SP IPS mod takes out the original screen and fits an IPS panel in its place, with a small board that connects it to the console.

Most kits include an on-screen menu, often called an OSD, for adjusting brightness and colour settings. You usually reach it with a button combination or a small touch pad, depending on the kit.

What changes on screen

If you're coming from an AGS-001, the difference is obvious from the moment it boots.

  • Brightness: the IPS panel is backlit, so the light comes through the screen rather than across it. You can play comfortably in a dim room, and turn it down for night-time play.
  • Contrast and colour: blacks look black rather than grey, and colours are richer. The washed-out look of the frontlight goes.
  • Sharpness: the pixels are crisper and more defined.
  • Viewing angles: IPS panels look good from an angle, so the picture holds up when you tilt the console.

Some people find the result a bit too clean compared with how they remember the games. That's partly why most kits let you tweak the picture through the OSD.

IPS mod versus buying an AGS-101

The obvious alternative is to buy a backlit AGS-101 instead. If you're not sure which model you've got, my guide to AGS-001 vs AGS-101 covers the checks.

Here's how the two routes compare:

  • Cost: the SP IPS screen mod is £95 on a console you already own. A good AGS-101 tends to sell for more than an AGS-001 second-hand, and prices vary, so check recent sold listings before deciding.
  • Screen quality: an IPS panel is typically brighter and sharper than the AGS-101's screen. The AGS-101 is a big step up from the frontlight, but it's still a screen design from the mid-2000s.
  • Condition: a second-hand AGS-101 comes with an ageing battery and an old charge port. You may end up paying for those later anyway.
  • Originality: an unmodified AGS-101 keeps its stock hardware, which matters if you care about collector value.

If you simply want the best screen to play on, the IPS mod usually wins. If you want an unmodified console that's still pleasant to play, an AGS-101 makes sense.

The collector-value caveat

This is the part people sometimes skip. Mods can't be undone easily. Once the original screen is out and the IPS kit is in, going back isn't a simple job.

For an everyday AGS-001 that's been played for years, that rarely matters. But if your SP is boxed, a limited edition, or in unusually good condition, it may be worth more to collectors as it is. In that case, think about keeping it original and modding a more ordinary console instead. The same goes for AGS-101s: they're already backlit, so the gain from modding one is smaller and the value you might lose is larger.

The full upgrade bundle

If you're going for the IPS mod, it's worth looking at the rest of the console too. SP batteries age, and the old-style charge port wears.

The SP full upgrade is £119 and includes:

  • the IPS screen mod;
  • a USB-C mod, which swaps the old Nintendo charge port for a USB-C port;
  • a new battery.

That's about £50 less than booking the three separately. If your SP won't hold a charge well, or you're tired of hunting for the old charger, it's the better-value option.

Before you book

All mods need a working console. If your SP won't charge, won't turn on, or has a damaged hinge or cracked screen, that needs looking at first, so get in touch before booking. You can see every SP option on the Game Boy Advance & SP hub, and there's more background on the screen tech in GBA IPS screen mods explained.

I test the finished console on my bench before it goes back to you, insured and tracked. Every mod comes with a 12-month warranty, and if I can't complete the job, there's no repair fee: no fix, no fee.

Frequently asked questions

Will an IPS mod change how my games play?

No. It only replaces the screen. The games, controls and sound work as before, and your saves are stored on the cartridges, not the console.

Can I adjust the brightness after the mod?

Most kits include an on-screen menu for brightness and colour settings, usually reached with a button combination or a small touch pad. I'll explain how yours works when it comes back.

Is it worth modding an AGS-101?

It can be, but the improvement is smaller than on an AGS-001 because the AGS-101 is already backlit. If it's boxed or in excellent condition, it may be worth more left original.
