N64 Repair: Won't Turn On or Black Screen
No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns
Signs you need this repair
- The power light doesn't come on
- The power light is on but the screen stays black
- A black screen with every game you try
- The console worked until it was moved or stored
- You're not sure if the power supply is the problem
A black screen on an N64 has a few common causes. The console needs a Jumper Pak or an Expansion Pak fitted in the slot on top; without one, it won't show a picture. Dirty cartridge contacts can stop a game from starting. And the power supply, which plugs into the back of the console, fails with age. Before booking, check the slot on top and try another game. The guides to the N64 black screen and the Jumper Pak and what to check when an N64 won't turn on cover the simple checks.
If it still won't work, this repair starts with a £4.99 assessment. I test the console on my bench, find the cause and send you a quote before any work. If you go ahead, the £4.99 comes off the repair, and repairs start from £39. If you decide not to, the £4.99 covers the return postage.
Please send the power supply with the console. Old power supplies fail too, and I need it to tell whether the fault is the power supply or the N64. Leave the Jumper Pak or Expansion Pak fitted, but remove any cartridge.
Once it's fixed, I test the console with its power supply and a game, then send it back insured and tracked. The repair has a 12-month warranty.
Some honest limits. A few faults need parts that are hard to find, and if that's the case I'll say so in the quote. If you want a sharper picture on a modern TV, that's a separate job: see the N64 HDMI mod. If I can't fix it, there's no repair fee: no fix, no fee.
