N64 HDMI Mod (Retro GEM)

£179

No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns

Reasons to book

  • Your N64 looks soft and blurry on a modern TV
  • Your TV has no SCART socket
  • You have a PAL N64, which doesn't output RGB without a mod
  • You want scaling and filter options built into the console
  • You'd rather plug straight into HDMI than use adapters

Plugged into a modern TV, the N64 usually runs over composite (the yellow plug), which gives a soft, smeary picture that looks worse the bigger the screen. The usual step up on other consoles is RGB, which carries the three colour signals separately, through a SCART socket. But the PAL N64 doesn't output RGB without a mod, and many new TVs no longer have SCART anyway. So for a modern TV, HDMI is the practical upgrade.

For £179, I fit a Retro GEM inside your N64. The Retro GEM, made by PixelFX, is an internal HDMI board that outputs digital video straight to an HDMI socket. It has scaling and filter options, so you can adjust how the picture looks, and it gets firmware updates over Wi-Fi. The board is included in the price. I fit it, test the picture and sound over HDMI, and send the console back insured and tracked. The mod has a 12-month warranty. PAL consoles run at 50Hz, and most modern TVs handle that over HDMI.

Some honest limits. The mod changes the inside of the console, and rare or boxed consoles lose collector value when modded, so think about that for a boxed N64. The HDMI mod improves the picture; it doesn't fix other faults. If your N64 won't turn on or stays on a black screen, book an N64 repair assessment first. If you're weighing up the options, RGB SCART or an HDMI mod explains the difference. If I can't complete the mod, there's no fee: no fix, no fee.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Retro GEM?
It's an internal HDMI board made by PixelFX. It sits inside the console and outputs digital video to HDMI, with scaling and filter options and firmware updates over Wi-Fi.
Is the board included in the price?
Yes. The £179 covers the Retro GEM board, fitting and testing.
Why not just use RGB?
The PAL N64 doesn't output RGB without a mod, and many new TVs don't have a SCART socket. For a modern TV, HDMI is the more practical route.
Will it affect the value of my N64?
Rare or boxed consoles lose collector value when modded. If yours is boxed or rare, bear that in mind before booking.

About this service

How does your mail-in repair service work?
Three steps: book and pay for your repair online, post your item to me using the packing instructions I email you, and I repair it, test it, and send it back tracked. You'll get updates as it moves through each stage.
What is your no-fix-no-fee promise?
Payment is taken upfront at booking. If I can't fix your item, there's no repair fee — I refund what you paid, less £4.99 return postage to send it back to you. Assessment bookings work differently: the £4.99 covers return postage and comes off the repair if you go ahead, but isn't refunded if you decide not to or it can't be repaired.
Do your repairs come with a warranty?
Yes. Every repair carries a 12-month workmanship warranty against the same fault returning. If it does, I'll put it right.
How long will my repair take?
Most repairs are completed within 3-6 working days of arrival, then posted back by tracked post. If a part needs ordering, I'll tell you as soon as I've diagnosed it and give you a realistic date. Diagnostic-led jobs take a little longer if I'm waiting on your approval of a quote.
How do I package my item safely to post it?
I send clear packing guidance when you book. In short: wrap the item well, use plenty of padding, and a sturdy box — the return leg is insured and tracked, and good packing on the way in protects your item too.
Where do I send my item?
Your postage address is included in the confirmation email after you book — you don't post anything until you've booked, so your item is always matched to your order.
Do you cover the whole UK?
Yes — I run a mail-in repair service, so you can send your item from anywhere in the UK. There's nothing local you need to find.
What if my item turns out to be unrepairable?
I'll tell you honestly and, where the fault allows, offer an alternative. If I can't fix it, there's no repair fee — I refund what you paid, less £4.99 return postage to send it back to you.
