An Xbox that won't turn on is one of the pricier faults to have, but it's still usually far cheaper to repair than to replace. The price depends on what has failed, and on what a quote actually covers. Here's what to expect in the UK.

What independent repairers charge

For an Xbox Series X|S that won't turn on, most independent UK repairers charge somewhere between about £90 and £150. Some list a power supply replacement only, and some cover board repairs too.

For context, Microsoft sells a genuine replacement power supply for the Series X for £82.99 on its own store, before any labour.

My price is £129 all-in for the Series X or Series S. That covers a genuine Microsoft power supply or a repair to the board's power circuit, an hour's test running a demanding game, and tracked return postage. The work is covered by a 12-month warranty. You pay to post the console to me.

Power supply only, or board faults too?

This is the biggest difference between quotes. A power supply price only helps if the power supply is what failed. If the fault is on the board, such as a blown fuse or a shorted component, some repairers charge more or can't help. My price covers both.

What's included matters

  • Genuine or copy. Ask whether the power supply is a genuine Microsoft unit.
  • Postage. A Series X is a heavy parcel.
  • Testing. It should be tested under a real load, not just switched on.
  • Warranty. Check the length.
  • What happens if it can't be fixed. With me, it's no fix, no fee: I refund what you paid, less return postage.
  • What happens if it's software. Some "dead" consoles are stuck on damaged system software. With me, a software-only fix is £49, and I refund the difference.

What can change the price

A software fault. Often fixable at home. See Xbox stuck on the start-up screen.

Liquid damage. Can be a much bigger job, so I quote for it separately first.

A failed processor or main chip. I can't repair these, so it's no fix, no fee.

Is it worth repairing?

Almost always, if the fault is the power supply or the board's power circuit. You keep your console, your games and your saves, for a fraction of the price of a new one.

Before you pay for anything

Work through Xbox won't turn on: what to check: a known-good cable and socket, a power supply reset, and the button on the console.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to buy the power supply and fit it myself?

It can be, if you're confident, the power supply is definitely the fault, and you're comfortable taking the console apart. The risk is paying for a power supply the console didn't need. If the fault is on the board, the new power supply won't fix it. Xbox power supply failure explains how to tell.

Is it still worth repairing an older Xbox Series X|S?

Yes. The consoles are still current, and a repair costs a fraction of a replacement. You keep your games, saves and settings too.

Will my games and saves survive the repair?

A power supply or board repair doesn't touch the console's storage, so your games and saves stay as they are.

My recommendation

Expect to pay around £90 to £150 for an Xbox no power repair, and check whether board faults are covered, whether the power supply is genuine, and what you'd pay if it's software. My Xbox Series X|S no power repair is £129 all-in with a 12-month warranty. When you're ready, how to pack an Xbox for posting will help it arrive safely.
