PS2 Fan Loud or Overheating? What to Check

A loud or overheating PS2 is most often down to dust building up inside, blocked vents, or the console sitting somewhere it can't breathe. Start by checking where it sits and clearing the vents. If it's still loud, runs very hot, or shuts down or freezes, book an assessment so the cause can be found properly.

Why a PS2 gets loud or hot

A PS2 has a fan that pulls air through the console to carry heat away from the chips and the power supply. When the airflow is restricted, the fan works harder, the console runs hotter, and you hear it.

Common causes include:

  • dust and fluff clogging the vents, the fan and the heatsink inside;
  • the console being boxed in, on a carpet or pushed against a wall;
  • a fan that's worn or dry after many years;
  • in some cases, a fault in the power supply or on the board.

Fat vs slim PS2

There are two broad designs.

  • The fat PS2 is the original, larger model. It has its power supply built in, and fat PS2s can run hot and loud when dust builds up. They're now a good age, so years of dust are common.
  • The slim PS2 is the later, smaller model. Depending on the model, the power supply is external or internal. It still has a fan and vents, and dust can still build up.

The checks below apply to both.

Check where it's sitting

Placement is the easiest thing to fix, and it costs nothing.

  • Keep the console out of closed cabinets. A shelf with an open front and back is better.
  • Don't stand it on carpet, a rug or a bed, which can block the vents underneath and throw up fluff.
  • Leave a few centimetres of space around the vents on every side.
  • Keep it away from radiators, sunny windows and other hot kit, such as the back of a TV or a set-top box.
  • Don't stack anything on top of it.

If the noise drops after you move it, that's a good sign the problem was airflow.

Clear the vents safely

You can do some cleaning without opening the console:

  1. Switch it off and unplug it from the mains. Let it cool down.
  2. Use a soft brush or a vacuum on a low setting to lift dust from the outside of the vents.
  3. If you use compressed air, give short bursts from a little distance and don't let the fan spin fast from the air. That can damage the fan.

This only clears the outside. Dust packed inside, around the fan and heatsink, needs the console opened.

A word of caution on opening it yourself: the fat PS2 has its power supply inside, so there's mains voltage circuitry in there. If you're not comfortable with that, leave it to a repairer.

When to book an assessment

Book the PS2 repair assessment if, after checking placement and the vents:

  • the fan is still loud, rattles or grinds;
  • the console gets very hot to the touch;
  • it freezes, crashes or switches itself off during play;
  • it won't turn on at all.

The assessment costs £4.99. I open the console, find the cause, and send you a quote before any work. If you go ahead, the £4.99 comes off the repair, which starts from £45. If you decline, the £4.99 covers the return postage. I'll tell you what I've found in plain terms, including if a part is hard to get.

If your PS2 also struggles to read discs, that's usually a separate issue with the laser or drive. The PS2 disc read error repair covers a replacement laser and a drive service, and my guide to fixing a PS2 disc read error explains the causes.

If you'd like a cleaner picture on a modern TV while it's in, the Retro GEM HDMI mod supports fat and slim PS2s. For posting tips, see how to pack a retro console for posting.

Every repair is tested on my bench before it goes back, with a 12-month warranty and an insured, tracked return. If I can't fix it, it's no fix, no fee. Other retro services are on the retro console repairs page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for a PS2 to be a bit noisy?

Some fan noise is normal, especially on the fat model. A sudden increase, a rattle or a grinding sound usually means dust or a tired fan.

Can overheating damage my PS2?

Running hot for long periods puts extra strain on the components. If the console gets very hot or shuts itself down, stop using it and have it checked.

Should I send the power supply with my slim PS2?

If your slim has an external power supply and the console won't turn on, send it with the console. For a noise or heat problem on its own, it isn't needed.
