PS2 Repair: Won't Turn On or Overheating
No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns
Signs you need this repair
- No power, or a red standby light that won't turn green
- The console turns on, then shuts off after a few seconds
- The fan is very loud or roars constantly
- The console gets very hot and freezes or switches off mid-game
- A burning smell or a click from inside, then nothing
A PS2 that won't turn on can have a fault in the power supply or on the board. On a fat PS2 the power supply is inside the console. On a slim, it's external or internal depending on the model. Fat PS2s can also run hot and loud as dust builds up inside, which can lead to freezes and shutdowns.
Because these faults can sit in more than one place, this is an assessment rather than a fixed-price repair. You pay £4.99 to book. I test the console on my bench, find the fault and send you a quote before I do any work. If you go ahead, the £4.99 comes off the repair. If you decide not to, the £4.99 covers the return postage and the console comes back to you.
For no-power jobs, please send the power supply with the console. If you have a slim with an external power brick, send the brick. If your PS2 has its power supply built in, send the mains lead you use with it. Old power supplies fail too, and I can only rule them out if I have them.
To be honest about the limits: some faults need parts that are hard to find, and if that's the case I'll say so in the quote. If your PS2 powers up but shows "Disc Read Error", book the PS2 disc read error repair instead. If the fan noise is your main worry, why a PS2 fan gets loud or overheats explains the usual causes.
