Vacuum brush attachment cleaning the top vent of an Xbox Series X

Dust is the main reason an Xbox Series X|S gets louder and hotter over time. The console pulls a lot of air through itself to stay cool, and some of the dust in that air stays behind. You can do a lot to keep on top of it without opening anything.

Here's how to clean an Xbox safely, what to avoid, and how to tell when it needs more.

How often to clean it

For most homes, a quick clean of the vents every month or two is plenty. Clean more often if you have pets, if the console sits on or near the floor, or if the room is dusty.

What you need

  • A vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment
  • A soft, dry microfibre cloth
  • A soft brush, such as a clean paintbrush

Leave out the compressed air, and anything wet.

Before you start

Turn the console fully off and unplug it from the wall. If it's been on, give it a few minutes to cool down.

1. The Series X

  • The top vent. This is where hot air leaves the console, and where dust is most visible. Run the vacuum's brush attachment gently over the grille. Use the soft brush to loosen dust between the openings.
  • The base and lower vents. Air comes in low down. Vacuum around the base and any vents near the bottom.
  • The back. Vacuum the vents around the ports.

2. The Series S

  • The large round vent. Vacuum it gently with the brush attachment.
  • The other vents on the sides and back, the same way.

3. The outside

Wipe the case with a dry microfibre cloth. For a stubborn mark, lightly dampen the cloth with water. Never spray anything onto the console, and keep moisture away from the vents and ports.

What not to do

  • Don't blow compressed air into the vents. It pushes dust deeper inside, and it can spin the fan much faster than it's designed to run.
  • Don't use liquids or sprays on or near the vents and ports.
  • Don't poke anything into the vents. Cotton buds leave fibres, and anything sharp can damage the fan.
  • Don't vacuum with the console switched on.

What you can't reach from outside

Behind the vents sits the heatsink, a block of thin metal fins that carries heat away from the processor, and the fan that pushes air through it. Over a few years, dust builds up on the heatsink fins and the fan blades where you can't reach it. The thermal paste between the processor and heatsink also dries out with age.

Vacuuming the vents slows the build-up, but it can't clear it once it's inside. For that, the console needs taking apart.

Signs it needs a clean inside

  • The fan is still loud after cleaning the vents
  • You get overheating warnings or it switches off during games
  • It's a few years old and has never been opened
  • The fan grinds or ticks, as well as being loud

If your console is still under Microsoft's warranty, contact Microsoft before opening it.

What the repair involves

An Xbox Series X|S overheating repair with me is a full strip-down clean for £59 all-in, including parts and tracked return postage, for the Series X or Series S. I clean the fan and heatsink, replace the thermal paste, and replace dried thermal putty where needed, then test the console for an hour running a demanding game before it's posted back. The work is covered by a 12-month warranty. Not sure yours needs it? Xbox overheating: what to check helps you decide.

Common questions

Can I use a can of compressed air if I'm careful?

It's best avoided. Blowing air into the vents pushes dust further into the heatsink and fan, which is exactly where it causes problems. It can also spin the fan much faster than it's designed for. A vacuum with a brush draws dust out instead.

Will cleaning the outside void the warranty?

No. Cleaning the outside and the vents is normal care. Opening the console is different, so check your warranty before doing that.

Should I clean the Series X standing up or lying down?

Whichever is easier. Just make sure it's switched off, unplugged and stable while you clean it.

My recommendation

Vacuum the vents every month or two. It takes minutes and keeps the console quieter for longer. Skip the compressed air. If the fan stays loud after a clean, or you start getting overheating warnings, the dust has built up inside, and a strip-down clean with fresh thermal paste will sort it.
