Game Boy Color Laminated IPS Mod
No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns
Reasons to book
- The old screen is hard to see without strong light
- You want the sharpest, most modern-looking screen available
- Your shell is scuffed, cracked or yellowed and you'd like a fresh one
- You want adjustable brightness and colour palettes
Like every Game Boy of its era, the Game Boy Color screen has no light of its own, so you need good room light to see it. An IPS mod replaces it with a modern backlit IPS panel (a type of LCD that stays clear from most viewing angles). The laminated version goes a step further: the glass is bonded directly to the panel, with no gap between them, so the image sits right at the surface and looks closer to a phone screen.
A laminated kit won't fit the standard shell, so this service includes a new laminated-ready replacement shell. I open your console, move the board and parts across to the new shell, fit the laminated panel and set up its on-screen menu (a small settings overlay for brightness and colour palettes). Then I test it with a game before it goes back.
This service is for the Game Boy Color, model CGB-001 on the label on the back. For the original Game Boy and the Pocket, see the Game Boy & Game Boy Color repair page.
Some honest limits. The mod needs a working console, so if yours has a fault, book the repair first or get in touch. Because your console moves into a new shell, it won't look the way it did when it left the factory. That's part of the appeal for most people, but on a boxed or rare console a mod may reduce its value to collectors, and it can't be undone easily. If you'd rather keep your existing shell, the drop-in Game Boy Color IPS mod does that.
For a side-by-side look at the two options, read the Game Boy Color IPS mod explained. No fix, no fee, and a 12-month warranty on the work.
