Game Boy Color IPS Screen Mod
No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns
Reasons to book
- You can only see the screen under a bright lamp or by a window
- The old screen looks faded, dark or washed out
- You want to play in the evening or on the move
- You'd like adjustable brightness without changing the shell
- The old screen has dead areas or marks behind the lens
The Game Boy Color screen has no light of its own. It relies on the light in the room, so on a dull day or in the evening it's hard to see what you're doing. This mod replaces it with a modern backlit IPS panel. IPS is a type of LCD that stays clear from most viewing angles, so colours look bright and even and you can play anywhere.
I use a drop-in IPS kit, which fits your existing shell without any cutting. I open the console, remove the old screen, fit the new panel and ribbon, and close it back up. Most kits have an on-screen menu (a small settings overlay on the display) for brightness and colour palettes, usually adjusted with a button combination or a touch pad. I set it up, then test the console with a game before it goes back to you.
This service is for the Game Boy Color, model CGB-001 on the label on the back. The original Game Boy and the Pocket have their own screen mods, and the Game Boy Advance is on the Game Boy Advance & SP page.
A few honest limits. The mod needs a working console, so if yours has another fault, book that repair first or get in touch. A drop-in kit sits behind your console's lens, so if the lens is badly scratched, mention it when you book. If you want the sharpest, most phone-like look, the laminated IPS mod with a new shell is the step up. Mods can't be undone easily, and on a boxed or rare console a mod may reduce its value to collectors, so it's worth weighing that up first.
If you're still deciding, the Game Boy Color IPS mod explained covers the options in more detail. The job is no fix, no fee and comes with a 12-month warranty.
