PS1 Not Reading Discs: Laser Replacement and Drive Service
No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns
Signs you need this repair
- Games won't load and the console goes to the memory card or CD player screen
- Discs spin, then stop
- Loading takes a very long time or freezes partway
- Music CDs play but games don't
- Cutscenes or in-game music skip and stutter
- The console only reads discs when it's turned upside down
The PS1 reads discs with a laser: a small unit that shines a beam onto the disc and picks up the reflection. The PS1's laser (the KSM-440 series) wears with age, and a worn laser is a common reason a console stops reading games.
It's not always the laser, though. A dirty lens, the drive's alignment, or the sled rails the laser moves along can all stop a disc reading. The rails in particular gather old, hardened grease and dust. That's why this repair includes a drive service and a test, not just a laser swap. I fit a replacement laser, clean and re-grease the sled rails, check the drive, and test the console with games before it goes back to you.
Before you book, try a known-good original disc, ideally one that isn't scratched. Scratched or dirty discs can fail on a healthy console, and it's worth ruling that out first. If several clean games fail, the drive is the likely culprit.
Some honest limits. If the fault turns out to be somewhere other than the drive, such as the board, I'll tell you what I've found before doing anything else. If your console won't turn on at all, the PS1 repair assessment is the right booking. You can read more about the causes in why a PS1 stops reading discs.
Please remove any disc from the drive before you pack the console. If you'd also like a sharper picture on a modern TV, the Retro GEM HDMI mod can be done at the same time. Mention it when you book and I'll quote for both. Every repair comes with a 12-month warranty.
