Mega Drive Repair: Won't Turn On or No Picture
No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns
Signs you need this repair
- No power light and nothing on screen
- The power light comes on but the TV stays black
- A picture that rolls, flickers or cuts out
- The console only works if the power lead is held at an angle
- It powers off on its own after a few minutes
- Games that used to load now give a blank or garbled screen
A Mega Drive that won't turn on, or powers up with no picture, can have several causes. Old power supplies (the external brick) fail with age. Electrolytic capacitors on the board dry out over the decades, and that can affect the picture and sometimes stop the console powering up at all. Dirty cartridge contacts can also leave you with a blank screen, so it's worth trying a different game before you send anything.
Because the fault could be in several places, this is an assessment rather than a fixed-price repair. You pay £4.99 to book. I test the console on my bench, find the fault and send you a quote before I do any work. If you go ahead, the £4.99 comes off the repair. If you decide not to, the £4.99 covers the return postage and the console comes back to you.
Please send the power supply with the console. A worn-out power brick is a common reason a console won't start, and I can only rule it in or out if I have it. Remove any cartridge before you pack it.
To be straight about the limits: some faults need parts that are hard to find, and if that's the case I'll say so in the quote. If the sound is the problem rather than the power or picture, the Mega Drive recap is the more likely fix. If you're weighing up costs across the range, the guide to retro console repair costs sets them out.
I've been repairing electronics for over 25 years, and a Mega Drive is a lovely console to bring back to life. Every repair comes with a 12-month warranty.
