Sony XM3 Headband Cracked: The Known Weak Spot

The WH-1000XM3 headband cracks in the same place on pair after pair. Here's why, what Sony tends to say, and how to decide between repairing and replacing.

If the headband on your Sony WH-1000XM3 has cracked near the slider on one or both sides, you've hit the XM3's best-known fault. Sony's own community forums have long threads full of owners describing the same crack in the same spot, often within months of buying them, and often on both sides.

The good news is that the crack doesn't affect the sound, the noise cancelling or the electronics. It's a structural repair, and a Sony hinge and headband repair replaces the broken part with a genuine Sony one where available.

Where the XM3 cracks

On each side of the XM3 headband there's an adjustable slider, and at the bottom of it the arm that holds the ear cup and lets it fold. The crack appears in the thin plastic where the slider and the band come together. Owners who've looked closely describe a small clip sitting underneath a thin section of plastic, so every time the band is extended or the headphones are folded, that thin section flexes over the clip.

Eventually it splits. A small piece can break off completely, and the ear cup assembly starts to come away from the band, exposing the wires underneath. Many owners find a stress crack starting on the other side when they check.

Signs it's starting

  • Creaking or crackling from the band when you move your head, even with the headphones switched off
  • A visible hairline crack where the slider meets the band
  • A section of band that flexes or clicks when you press it
  • Wires visible through a gap in the plastic

The XM3 is also known for creaking from the arms that hold the ear cups. A creak on its own isn't always a crack, but a creak that gets louder over a few weeks is worth checking under a bright light.

Why so many XM3 headbands crack

The XM3 folds for its case. To put them away you adjust the band and fold both ear cups in, so the joint flexes every time they're stored, not just when you wear them. The plastic at that joint is thin, and the stress concentrates in the same place on every pair. That's why owners who are careful with them, and keep them in the case, still report the same crack.

What Sony says

The usual answer on Sony's forums has been that a cracked headband is physical damage, and not covered by the warranty. A Sony service centre can quote for the repair. The XM3 came out in 2018, so almost every pair still in use is outside Sony's one-year warranty anyway.

If yours are newer than you'd expect, or you bought them with an extended warranty, it's still worth asking. And your consumer rights are with the retailer, not Sony. See Sony hinge broken: warranty and your consumer rights.

Stop wearing them until it's fixed

Once the band has cracked, the wiring that runs through it is exposed and carries some of the load. Keep wearing them, and the crack can widen until the cable breaks, and then you lose sound on one side. Put them in their case until they're repaired.

Is it worth repairing an XM3?

This is a fair question for the XM3, because it's the oldest of the XM headphones still in wide use. Here's how I'd think about it:

  • Worth repairing if the battery still lasts you a full day and the headphones work well apart from the crack. You keep a pair you know, with noise cancelling that still holds up well.
  • Worth thinking twice if the battery is also tired, the ear pads are flat and the band is cracked on both sides. Then you may be paying for several repairs on an older pair, and a newer model might make more sense.

It's your call, and I'll happily repair either way. Is it worth repairing Sony headphones goes through the sums in more detail.

Why glue doesn't hold

The cracked section flexes every time the headphones are folded or adjusted, which is exactly what glue handles worst. Glued XM3 bands tend to crack again beside the old line, and glue that reaches the slider can stop it moving. Tape can hold it together as a stopgap, but the strain on the wiring is still there.

How I repair a cracked XM3 headband

  1. I open the ear cup and free the cable where it runs into the band.
  2. I remove the broken headband section or arm.
  3. I fit a genuine Sony replacement part where available, reclaimed from another pair and inspected before it goes in. It's in very good condition but may show light signs of wear.
  4. I check the cable along its run for damage from the crack, and repair it if needed.
  5. I reassemble and run a full bench test: both drivers, noise cancelling, microphones, touch controls, Bluetooth and charging.

If both sides are cracked, or the second side is starting to go, both can be done in the same repair for less than two separate jobs.

Questions people ask

Can a cracked Sony XM3 headband be fixed?

Yes. The broken section is replaced with a genuine part where available, and the headphones work as before. The cable is checked as part of the repair.

Why has my XM3 headband cracked on both sides?

Both sides do the same job and take the same strain every time the headphones are folded or adjusted. It's common for one to crack first and the other to follow.

Will Sony repair a cracked XM3 headband for free?

Rarely. Owners report Sony treating it as physical damage and quoting a paid repair. Most XM3s are well outside Sony's warranty now in any case.

My XM3 creaks but hasn't cracked. Should I do anything?

Check it closely for a hairline crack. If there isn't one, store it carefully and avoid stretching the band more than you need to. If the creak gets worse or a crack appears, that's the time to repair it. See Sony XM3 creaking or cracking noise for more.

My recommendation

If your XM3 headband has cracked, stop wearing them before the wiring suffers. If the rest of the headphones are in good shape, a headband repair with a genuine part gives them a lot more life. If the battery and pads are also worn out, weigh up the total before deciding.
