When your Sony WH-1000XM headphones break, the honest answer to "should I repair them?" is: it depends. On what's wrong, how old they are, the state of the rest of them, and what you'd buy instead.
Here's a simple way to decide.
Start with what's wrong
Some faults are much better value to repair than others.
Usually worth repairing:
- A broken hinge or cracked headband. One part, and the rest of the headphones are unaffected. See Sony XM5 hinge broken.
- A worn battery. The one part designed to wear out. A new one gives you back your battery life.
- A worn charging port. A common, contained repair.
Worth checking before deciding:
- No sound on one side, won't turn on, or touch controls not working. These need diagnosing. Some turn out to be a simple fix, such as a broken cable at the hinge or a flat battery. Some don't.
- Liquid damage. It can affect several parts at once.
Then look at the rest of the headphones
Ask yourself:
- Does the battery still last you a day? If not, that's a second repair to add.
- Are the ear pads flat or cracked? Pads are cheap and easy to replace yourself, but add to the total.
- Is the other hinge creaking? If so, plan to do both sides.
- Is the noise cancelling still good? If it is, the headphones are still doing their main job well.
One fault on otherwise healthy headphones is a clear case for repair. Three or four worn things at once makes replacing them worth considering.
Compare the costs
At the time of writing, my fixed prices for the most common repairs are:
- Hinge or headband, one side: XM3 £59, XM4 £64, XM5 £69
- Battery replacement: XM3 or XM4 £55, XM5 £59
- Charging port: XM3 £55, XM4 or XM5 £59
Those include parts, a full bench test, tracked return postage and a 12-month warranty. The current prices are always on the Sony headphone repair page.
To replace them instead, going by Amazon UK's price history through 2026:
- A new XM5 has sold for roughly £180–£230
- The newer XM6 launched at £399.99
For a single fault, a repair usually costs between a quarter and a half of a replacement. For a full breakdown, see how much Sony headphone repair costs.
Think about what you'd replace them with
- A used pair is cheaper, but you don't know its history, and it may have the same weak hinge or a tired battery.
- A new XM5 is the same model with a fresh warranty, and the same hinge design.
- An XM6 is newer and redesigned, but costs far more.
- A different brand is a fresh start, but you lose the fit, sound and features you've got used to.
A simple rule of thumb
- Repair if it's one fault, the battery still lasts and the noise cancelling still works well.
- Repair and fix the other weak point at the same time if the second hinge is creaking or the battery is tired. Doing both at once is cheaper than two separate repairs later.
- Think about replacing if several things are worn, the repair total gets close to the price of a used pair, or you were planning to upgrade anyway.
It's your headphones and your choice. I'll happily repair them either way, and I'll tell you honestly if I find something else worn while they're open.
The other reason to repair
Repairing keeps a perfectly good pair of headphones in use and out of landfill. For hinge repairs I use genuine Sony parts reclaimed from other headphones wherever they're available, so even the replacement part is being reused.
Questions people ask
Is it worth repairing Sony XM4 headphones?
For a single fault like a broken swivel or a worn battery, usually yes. The repair costs a fraction of a replacement pair. If several things are worn, compare the total with a newer model.
Is it worth repairing old Sony XM3 headphones?
If the battery still lasts and the noise cancelling is good, a headband or battery repair can give them a lot more life. If both the battery and the headband have gone, compare the total with a newer pair first.
How long will my Sony headphones last after a repair?
The repaired part is covered by a 12-month warranty. How long the rest lasts depends on how worn it is, which is why it's worth looking at the battery and the other hinge at the same time.
Will a repaired pair be as good as new?
For a hinge, battery or charging port repair, they should work exactly as they did before the fault. Cosmetic wear stays, and a reclaimed hinge part may show light signs of wear.
My recommendation
One fault on otherwise good headphones: repair them. Several worn parts at once: add it up and compare with a newer pair before deciding.
If you'd like a fixed price, the Sony headphone repair page lists every repair. If you're not sure what's wrong, my any-fault repair starts with a £4.99 assessment and a quote.
