If your Sony WH-1000XM3, XM4 or XM5 headphones have broken, the first question is usually what it'll cost to fix them, and whether that's worth it compared with buying a new pair. This guide sets out the realistic costs of each route in the UK, for the faults that come up most: broken hinges and headbands, worn batteries and charging problems.

Prices move, so I've said where each figure comes from.

The short answer

For most faults on Sony XM headphones, expect to pay roughly:

  • Independent repairs typically run from about £55 to £130, depending on the model and fault, including return postage.
  • Sony's own paid repair: Sony quotes it for your model and fault.
  • £6–£25 per part if you do it yourself, plus your time, tools and the risk.
  • Around £180–£230 for a new pair of XM5s, going by recent Amazon UK prices.

The detail matters, though, because the right answer depends on the fault, the model and the condition of the rest of the headphones.

Repair costs by fault

Broken hinge or cracked headband

This is the most common fault on all three models. The XM3 cracks at the headband, the XM4 snaps at the swivel, and the XM5 breaks at the hinge bracket.

  • My fixed prices, including a genuine Sony part where available, a full bench test, return postage and a 12-month warranty, at the time of writing: XM3 £59, XM4 £64, XM5 £69 for one side; XM3 £108, XM4 £118, XM5 £128 for both. The current prices are always on my Sony headphones hinge repair page.
  • Other independent repairers charge similar amounts.
  • Sony's paid repair: Sony quotes it when you contact them.
  • DIY parts: genuine XM5 hinge brackets turn up on eBay. Aftermarket XM4 swivels can be had for under £10, though they're not Sony parts.

Battery replacement

  • My fixed prices: XM3 or XM4 £55, XM5 £59, including the battery, a charge and discharge check, a full bench test, return postage and a 12-month warranty. See Sony headphones battery replacement.
  • Sony's paid repair: ask Sony for a quote for your model. Prices aren't published, and owners report widely varying figures.
  • DIY parts: replacement batteries built to Sony's specification cost roughly £15–£30, depending on the model and seller.

Charging port

  • My fixed prices: XM3 £55, XM4 or XM5 £59. See Sony headphones charging port repair.
  • DIY: a port repair means desoldering and resoldering a small USB-C connector on a board, which needs proper rework equipment. It isn't a job for a soldering iron and a steady hand.

Other faults

No sound on one side, headphones that won't turn on, touch controls or noise cancelling that have stopped working: these depend on what has actually failed. My any-fault repair starts with a £4.99 assessment, which covers return postage, then a quote from £39. If you go ahead, the £4.99 comes off the repair.

Repair or replace: the numbers

Here's how the main options compare for a typical XM5 with a broken hinge:

  • Independent repair, one side: typically about £60 to £70. Your own headphones back, with a warranty on the repair.
  • Sony's paid repair: quoted by Sony. Sony's own service; owners report longer waits.
  • DIY: the part plus tools. The cheapest if it goes well; your risk if it doesn't.
  • A used replacement XM5. A pair of unknown history, possibly with the same weak hinge.
  • A new XM5: around £180–£230. A new pair, often on offer.

Amazon UK's price history shows the XM5 selling new for between about £180 and £230 through 2026. The newer XM6 launched at £399.99.

So for a single fault on otherwise healthy headphones, a repair usually costs between a quarter and a half of a replacement. The sums change if several things are worn at once. If the hinge is broken, the battery is tired and the pads are flat, you might be paying for two or three repairs.

My guide on whether it's worth repairing Sony headphones goes through that decision in more detail.

What's usually included, and what isn't

When you compare quotes, check what you're actually getting:

  • Return postage. Mine includes tracked return postage. Some quotes don't, and it adds a few pounds.
  • The warranty on the repair. Mine is 12 months. Some repairers offer three months.
  • The part. Genuine Sony, reclaimed Sony, or aftermarket? All can work, but you should know which you're getting.
  • Testing. A repair should be followed by a full test of both drivers, noise cancelling, microphones and charging, not just the part that was changed.
  • What happens if it can't be fixed. I don't charge a repair fee if I can't repair them. You get back what you paid, less £4.99 return postage.

Hidden costs to watch for

  • Postage in. With most postal repairs, including mine, you pay to post the headphones in. Use a tracked service, as headphones are worth enough to be worth tracking.
  • Assessment or diagnostic fees. Ask whether they're taken off the repair if you go ahead.
  • Second visits. If one hinge has broken, the other is often close behind. Doing both at once costs less than two separate repairs and saves postage both ways twice.

Questions people ask

How much does Sony charge to repair headphones?

Sony doesn't publish its repair prices. Ask Sony for a quote for your exact model and fault.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace Sony XM4s?

For a single fault, usually repair. A hinge or battery repair costs a fraction of a replacement. If several parts are worn at once, compare the total with a newer pair.

Does a repair void my warranty?

An independent repair can affect what Sony or the retailer will cover afterwards. If you're still within warranty, or think you have a consumer-rights claim, try that first. See Sony hinge broken: warranty and your consumer rights.

Why are your prices different for each model?

The parts cost different amounts. A genuine XM5 hinge bracket costs more than an XM3 or XM4 part, for example. The work involved is similar.

My recommendation

If your headphones are otherwise in good shape and only one thing has gone, a repair is usually better value than replacing them. If several things are worn out at once, add up the repairs and compare the total with a newer pair before deciding.
