Dyson Supersonic Blowing Cold
No fix, no fee · 12-month warranty · Insured, tracked returns
Signs you need this repair
- Air blows but stays cold
- Heat settings make no difference
- Warm at first then goes cold
- Only heats on the highest setting
- Heat cuts out but the fan keeps running
If the motor runs normally and the air comes out cold, the fault is on the heating side. That covers a wide range: at the cheap end, a thermal cut-out that has tripped or a temperature sensor that has drifted; at the expensive end, the heater assembly itself.
The Supersonic heats with thin heater elements and a thermistor that constantly measures and regulates the temperature, managed by control electronics in the body. The element and its control electronics are built as one assembly, so a single failed component means replacing the lot, and there's very little independent parts supply for them.
That's why this starts with an assessment rather than a price. You pay £4.99 when you book, which covers the tracked return postage. I open it, test the element, the cut-out, the sensor and the board, measure the outlet temperature on every setting against a known-good Supersonic, and send you a quote. Nothing else happens until you say yes.
If it's the cut-out or the sensor, it's my £85 cutting-out repair. If the heater assembly has failed, it's from £129. Go ahead and the £4.99 comes off, with a 12-month warranty, a PAT safety test and insured tracked return postage included. Decide against it, or if it can't be repaired, I post it back and the £4.99 covers that postage.
I'll also tell you when it isn't worth doing. Dyson list £99 for out-of-warranty repairs, though they ask hair dryer owners to contact them for a price. If your dryer needs a full heater assembly and Dyson will do it for less, that may well be the better deal, and I'd rather tell you than take your money.
