Sony WH-1000XM6 Repair: What Can Be Fixed So Far

The WH-1000XM6 is Sony's newest over-ear model, so repair options are still developing. Here's where things stand, and what to do if yours develops a fault.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 launched in May 2025 at £399.99 in the UK, as the successor to the XM5. Because it's Sony's newest model, there's less repair history, fewer known faults and a thinner supply of parts than for the XM3, XM4 and XM5. This guide sets out where things stand, and what to do if yours develops a fault.

Check the warranty first

Many XM6s are still young, so start with the warranty and your consumer rights:

  • Sony's warranty. Sony's standard manufacturer warranty on headphones has been one year, sometimes extended by promotions or the retailer.
  • Your consumer rights. Under the Consumer Rights Act, your claim is with the retailer you bought from, and can go beyond Sony's warranty. See Sony hinge broken: warranty and your consumer rights. The same principles apply to the XM6.

Don't open or repair the headphones if you think you have a claim, as it can give a reason to refuse.

Try the free fixes

Before anything else, try the basics: charge with a known-good cable and plug, restart, reset and update the firmware in Sony's headphones app. These clear a lot of software problems. The XM6 reset follows the same pattern as the XM5: see how to reset Sony WH-1000XM5, and check Sony's help guide for the XM6's exact button names.

What's known so far

  • The hinge has been redesigned. The XM5's best-known weak point was the hinge, and the XM6 appears to have a redesigned hinge mechanism. It's too early to say how it holds up over years of use.
  • The battery will wear in time, as every lithium battery does.
  • The charging port takes daily wear, as on every model.

I'll update this guide as patterns emerge from real repairs.

How I handle XM6 repairs

I don't have fixed prices for the XM6 yet, while the parts supply builds up. Instead, it comes in through my Sony headphones repair (any fault):

  1. You book and pay a £4.99 assessment, which covers return postage.
  2. I assess the fault and email you what I found and a quote, if the part can be sourced.
  3. You approve and pay, or decline and get them back.
  4. If you go ahead, the £4.99 comes off the repair.

If the part isn't available, I'll tell you honestly rather than attempt a repair I can't stand behind.

Questions people ask

Can the Sony WH-1000XM6 be repaired?

Yes, depending on the fault and the availability of parts. Start with Sony or the retailer if you're within warranty. Otherwise, an assessment finds the fault and gives you a quote.

Does the XM6 have the same hinge problem as the XM5?

The hinge appears to have been redesigned, and there isn't the same pattern of reports yet. It's too early to say for certain.

When will you have fixed prices for the XM6?

When there's a reliable supply of parts and enough repairs to price them fairly. Until then, it's assessment and quote.

My recommendation

Use the warranty or your consumer rights first if your XM6 is young. If not, try the free fixes, then book an assessment. I'll tell you what's wrong and what it'll cost before doing anything.
